What support do we offer?

We offer a comprehensive Community Child Health Service for all children from birth to school leaving age, outwith the hospital setting, for medical and developmental conditions which may have an impact on a child’s wellbeing and ability to access educational provision.

We offer consultation and advice to schools and psychological services.   We also have a role in providing services for vulnerable children including those where there are Child Protection issues or who are Looked After or Looked After and Accommodated.

Who can receive our services?

Our Service is available to all children and young people living in the City of Edinburgh from birth to school leaving age.

The objectives of the Service are: -

  • to identify children with developmental and long-term health problems as early as possible and mobilise services appropriate to need.
  • to provide support and coordinate services for children with special needs at home, in nursery, mainstream and special school.
  • Health promotion
  • to achieve highest level of immunisation for school age children
  • to participate in Lothian Child Protection Programme
  • to ensure provision of care for looked after children.

How do school staff access the service?

Each school has a School Health Team allocated on a locality basis with a named school nurse for each school, who is part of a School Nurse Team for the locality with a School Nurse Team Leader. (See separate entry for School Nursing Service on the NHS website above)  Medical services for schools are also allocated on a team basis.  Referrals to the School Health Team can be made either through the Pupil Support Group or using a referral form with parental permission.   This referral will be triaged by the school nurse.  The most appropriate member of the School Health Team will respond or a decision will be made to refer on to another agency such as Child and Family Mental Health Services or Social Work within Children and Families.
