What support do we offer?

In schools we support bilingual pupils within mainstream primary, secondary and special schools in liaison with class and subject teachers. We offer advisory and assessment visits for pupils in Nursery.

Additional language classes are available to some mainstream secondary pupils on a part time basis.

We offer advice and support on assessment, resources, teaching strategies, welfare and guidance related issues, arrangements for external and alternative examinations and linguistic and cultural matters.

In-service training is available to all staff (including Nursery staff) via the CPD Directory of Opportunities and can be offered in schools to meet particular needs.

Who can receive our services?

Pupils whose first or home language is not English can use our service. They may be beginners, those with limited English or those who speak English as an additional language fluently but who may require support with, for example, higher order literacy skills in order to achieve their full academic potential.

How do school staff access the service?

A referral should be made to the EAL teacher assigned to the school as part of the enrolment process of a pupil who is bilingual.  Where there is no EAL teacher, the Head Teacher should contact the EAL service base as detailed above.  An EAL Service Referral Form is available online  or from our Service Policy Document.
