What support do we offer?

Linked to each of the five neighbourhood groups within the City of Edinburgh is a Support Coordinator who undertakes a range of tasks, all of which focus on the education of children with additional support needs in our schools, whether special, nursery, primary or secondary.

More specifically, Support Coordinators:

  • advise schools on the approaches and resources that may be used to support the learning of individual pupils;
  • give practical advice to class and Support for Learning and Support for Pupils teachers;
  • contribute as appropriate to Pupil Support Groups and multi-disciplinary assessments;
  • provide information to schools on the assessment procedures they may use in identifying pupils’ needs;
  • provide a link between school management teams and the Children and Families Department on all issues relating to the Integration Audit;
  • contribute to staff development, mainly within the Neighbourhood;
  • advise schools on the effective use of Learning Assistants;
  • provide a link between schools and the Children and Families Department on the provision of specialist equipment and building adaptations;
  • liaise between schools at times of pupil transition;
  • provide advice for the Department on matters relevant to supporting children with additional support needs;
  • undertake a moderation role with regard to the Integration Audit;
  • to be involved as appropriate with the Professional Assessment Group (PAG) process - representation on all PAG groups.
